Sunday morning and I'm up quite a few hours after the crack of dawn.

I'm walking and eating 3 healthy meals a day so my metabolism is working at peak. If anything stands between me and breakfast, I'll probably kill it, cut it into bits and bury them seperately.
The closest food fix was 3 metres from my house, so over I went again for the slow braised beef Mi Quang.

Having sated my own appetite, I had to sort out the cat.
My adolescent tabby was OK for brekky, but he now requires chef-cooked meals,
He started on dry food, gave it up in favour of tinned, and now of course he likes Dad to grab something fresh from the market and he has become the consummate food critic.

Below photo is my local market. It's known as "Mrs Ky Market" and it's small, friendly and reasonably honest.
On Sunday morning it's so busy – really pumping.

At the entrance – miniature shellfish.
These can be an issue for travellers and those with seafood issues – more 'allergic' than most seafood and easy to get sick from.
They don't taste too bad, but a bit of a hassle.
Pay a few bob more, and get the peeled ones.
in Thailand we had these as an omelet, also salad.

Bananas are always in season. 
Green ones makes great crisps. Green bananas are thinly sliced and served as a starchy astringent accompaniment to squid, along with carambola/starfruit.

Next stop was Piggsville.
Normally I'm a sucker for the ears but baby puss prefers the liver. Although if I'm eating ears, he'll happily eat ears too.
In fact, he'll insist on it.
Neither of us were in the mood for head.
We'll leave that for another day.

The seafood was pretty good today – fruit also.
Coming into summer, everything is available.

Shark is not a main catch – but there's a bit of it around from time to time.
Local Tuna is pretty popular – red and tasty. Not good enough for sashimi, but OK for salads, grills, soups.
Shark is great as fish and chips – as a kid in New Zealand it used to be one of the main components of dinner from our 'fish and chip shops'
Back then it was called 'lemonfish' – but it was actually fillets of  "Jaws"

As discussed, a busy day at the market.

Chicken is available – dead and plucked, ar clucking around nervously in a cane basket.
Up to you.
Like a serve of murder with lunch? Grab a couple of cackling fowls and have Da Nang's freshest chicken.
Not up to the blood and carnage? Grab one of these instead.
No frozen chooks here – all fresh every morning.

Green jackfruit.
This is not a variety – it's just immature jackfruit.
It gets peeled and it's used in salad.
The Hue style pork and prawn salad with green jackfruit is exceptional. We do it at the hotel.
Recipe will follow. Just hassle me below if you don't want to wait.

After peeling, here's the end product.
Just toss with peanuts, fresh herbs, shallot, roast pork, prawn, salt or fish sauce & pepper. Yum

Mangoes are excellent right now.
The taste, texture, size and price is exactly right.
We do a great sea bass dish on cucumber & yoghurt.
The fish is crusted with coriander seed & pan fried.
The topping is a salad of ripe mango, ripe tomato, fried shallots, fresh shallots and fresh coriander.
It rocks!

Even just sliced 'au natural' these are sensational.

Mangoes, mangosteen, custard apple, jackfruit are the pick of the fresh fruits right now. Oh – and soursop!

Not into a sexy local salad?
Ripe jackfruit is an exceptional taste as well. Well worth a small investment. jackfruit is addictive.
It makes a great relish for Indian spiced chicken too.
Jackfruit, preserved lemon, capsicum, cinnamon, clove, sugar, vinegar – reduce.
Crush fresh garlic, ginger, shallot – add clove, cinnamon, cardamom, black pepper and use to crust chicken.

And of course the humble coconut.
Coconut water and coconut flesh – healthy, refreshing, delicious – and cheap.

Just a swiftie – life is a bit hectic but very rewarding.
