I had a nice surprise yesterday after a trip into the city.
It was an 8am bike ride through rainy and grey Da Nang and we were hungry, so we stopped at “Pho Bac 63” on Dong Da Street for a steaming bowl of their beef noodle soup.
The Pho was magnificent with an aromatic broth and very tender beef. My better half piled on ‘ngo gai’ leaf and local basil and we eyeballed each other in silence, the only sound being a syncopated slurping and clatter of chopsticks.
Sated, we headed back to the bike, only to see a vendor with a cart of interesting orange and white things under a sheet of plastic.
Closer inspection revealed a treat that I hadn’t come across yet in this city.
Candied coconut, candied sweet potato and the piece de resistance, candied turmeric which is reputedly good for coughs, infection and sore throats.
The sweet potato definitely tasted of itself, but with a richer flavor and a texture to die for.
The turmeric was quite strong but well balanced by the sweetness and the semi drying.
The coconut was excellent, as always.
If you see this, give it a try
